Government Set to Announce New Cocoa Producer Price Ahead of 2025/2026 Season

The government is expected to announce a revised producer price for cocoa ahead of the new crop season, which begins on August 7, 2025.

According to Joy Business, the update follows the conclusion of work by the Technical Committee on Producer Price, which has submitted its recommendations for government approval.

Sources indicate that Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson will announce the new producer price in the coming days.

Currently, the producer price stands at GH¢3,100 per bag (64kg) or GH¢49,600 per metric ton.

Government's Stance on Producer Pricing

President John Mahama recently reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Ghanaian cocoa farmers receive at least 70% of the world market price for cocoa. He emphasized that this move is part of a broader agenda to restore dignity and fairness to cocoa farmers, who remain the backbone of the country’s agricultural economy.

Concerns Over Currency Impact

In a recent interview on PM Express Business Edition, the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Dr. Randy Abbey, expressed concern about the impact of the cedi’s sharp appreciation on the real incomes of cocoa farmers.

He explained that although global cocoa prices are currently high suggesting a potential boost in earnings the strength of the Ghana cedi may reduce the actual gains when converted from dollars to local currency.

 “What we’re witnessing is a scenario where international cocoa prices are favorable, which should benefit our farmers. However, with the cedi strengthening rapidly, these gains may be significantly reduced when translated into Ghana cedis,” Dr. Abbey noted.
